I’m not sure where you are getting your data, but short interest only went up by about 1M shares over a period of two weeks (8/31-9/15).
Maybe you are confused about it going up overnight because the semi-monthly data was just released. But as you can see from the chart below (from Fintel), short interest is relatively stable:
Date Short Interest Days to Cover
2021-09-15 38,362,751 9.14
2021-08-31 37,467,606 11.41
2021-08-13 36,577,531 6.86
2021-07-30 36,063,055 8.72
2021-07-15 35,060,061 8.54
2021-06-30 35,769,233 9.46
2021-06-15 37,327,383 8.34
2021-05-28 39,220,430 4.81
You are also wrong about the borrowing costs. They are currently at 14.75%. But if you go to shortablestocks.com/, you will see that the rates fluctuate significantly. They were over 34% last week and are likely to rise again with the restricted supply.
