All therapeutics are being slow-played, in my opinion, because the FDA believes easy and successful treatments after infection would disincentivize people to become vaccinated.

The health authorities of this country want to use terror to stampede the herd to become vaccinated. This is their sage strategy for public health.

They do not feel obliged to level with the population or educate us or convince us of the wisdom of following the vaccination route, they simply want to get the result they believe to be the best (remember the dishonesty about masks early on?).

They are not evil people, again in my opinion, but they just don't want to fight the battle for public opinion. So they let the virus speak for them - thorough the argument of misery and death. I do believe they are cynical, perhaps to the point of being evil in their cynicism.

But it is also true that part of the calculation is that this pandemic is worldwide and the problem is bigger than just the US or the affluent countries. They don't want to level with the world either. They don't want to face the pushback and blame they would get and, in many cases, rightly deserve.

Thus the policy we have and the state we are in. IMO.
