Some years ago Dendreon had great success in a clinical trial for their prostate cancer drug. The FDA Advisory Panel passed it with flying colors. When it came to the final approval panel, one member of the panel was so vehement in his opposition to its approval that the drug was NOT approved.
After about a year of petitions and public outcry from men who wanted to try the drug, it was announced that there would be a Congressional hearing to investigate why the drug wasn't approved.
Miraculously, the FDA convened another panel, and decided that golly gee, after all, we really oughta approve this drug.
Who was the person who blocked the drug's approval a year before, costing who knows how many lives, and certainly caused investors to lose millions of dollars?
A scientist working on a rival drug, for a big pharma. Yet the FDA let him be on the review panel.
