This article was written in 2009. I believe we are now witnessing some of it coming to fruition.

In particular, semiconductor QDs have emerged as a new platform for high-throughput quantitative characterization of multiple biomarkers in cells and clinical tissue specimens ex vivo, detection of diseased cells in vivo, and potentially targeted and traceable drug delivery [3, 7, 8]."
This is where I think we are headed to in the very near future, particularly with molecular fingerprinting of diseases.
