The most transmissible variant will be most common - certainly not one that is more lethal but less transmissible.
At the fraction of people we have vaccinated, even sometimes being able to evade antibodies is only a small advantage relative to differences in R-zeros.
So, in a way, the British variant may be protecting us from the South African one.
