This is a bit sensationalist.. not every variant will have mutations that confer an evolutionary advantage or increase virulence or mortality. Odds are high, however, that a few of these will be more virulent and / or lethal, and they will become the dominant strains.
It's a stark warning to the rest of the world, and I have a bad feeling that before this pandemic is over, Brazil won't be the only one in this state.
