It's worse than that and what the media is not reporting is that staff and residents of long-term care facilities have not yet been vaccinated.
There was an active outbreak in my mom's assisted living since after Thanksgiving, but they appeared to have got it under control and it had not gone into my mom's memory care. I was anxiously awaiting the vaccine for them. Then on Dec 31, 10 days after the doses arrived in my state I learned that my mom's facility was not going to be vaccinated until Jan 26!
I was upset and wrote to every public official and agency I could think of. Then on Jan 4, it was reported that my mom and her entire memory care had Covid. It is devastating. It is too late for my mom, but I began a fight to get the vaccine ASAP to the staff and the rest of the residents in the other part of the building. I wrote to my state senator who said she would speak to the governor, I wrote multiple times to the governor and the secy of the DHHS. I called County Health. I gave 2 interviews to two local journos. No one did anything. The journos did not write about it.
Now, my mom's favorite caregiver got Covid and she lives with her 90 year old grandfather. Multiple other caregivers got it. They are running out of staff. No vaccines.
Meanwhile, I learned that our local University teaching hospital (I live in a college town) had given their doses to staff who were not, by any stretch of the imagination, frontline healthcare. Those doses should have been saved for LTCF staff as they are frontline healthcare and now they are all getting sick and spreading it further into the facilities. These people work for shit wages and don't even get sick leave when they get Covid on the job.
I am sorry that this is totally off-topic, but I wish people knew about this. It's despicable and inhumane.
