The problem for many (not directed at anyone particularly), is that numbers do not convey the impact of Covid until it impacts them directly.
Covid mortality is 650 times higher over age 85 than under 30, so the young, unless they have grandparents dying can easily dismiss Covid.
Those who are not witnessing the impact first hand will have difficulty appreciating it. Some of that is a natural, though ultimately unhelpful, defense mechanism.
We trust physicians, until the message they deliver runs counter to our beliefs and desires. ICUs are full in many parts of the country, but until we need a bed ourselves, it is just an academic observation for many.
19.6 Million covid case and "only" 340K deaths means that over 19M have had covid and not died.
Denying the reality of the covid deaths is inappropriate, but it is also inappropriate to casually (not at aimed at you) dismiss the impact of Covid control measures.
It is a difficult situation altogether.
