Because approvals take time. This is an easy way to save lives in the interim.
Why else would they do it? Again, this notion that the FDA couldnt ask the DSMC how it's going is just obsurd.
I don't know for certain that they have, but I am confident that they could. The FDA doesn't need to be blinded, they don't have the potential to inject bias into the process.
