I would add that it takes someone stubborn (naive?) enough to jump in when others have give up.

We witnessing the emergence of leronlimab and mRNA vaccines due to the dogged determination of those who’ve pushed on when others turned to easier pathways.

I have new appreciation for stubbornness.
