Even in the 2 and 1/2 year bear in 2000-2002, some stocks went up. BYI, Bally Technologies who made slot machines went up 106 fold in those exact same months. That was the start of many Indian casino's and many other casino's around the world. I'd like to post the chart, but they were bought out along the way.
