A dividend will stick it to the shorts and force them to pay a payment in lieu of dividend to whomever they borrowed the shares from. Not only will they be upside down by then, forced to deposit money into their margin account to cover margin calls, but the shorts will need to come up with money to pay a dividend, as well. Poetic justice, if you ask me.
