I think if the rem trial and our own CD12 trial had begun at the same point in time, back at the beginning of the crisis, we would have had the same outcome, i.e. it would have been unethical to let people die on placebo.
At this point in time, the "placebo" or standard of care is keeping many more people alive than it was back when Rem's trial was happening. Fauci needed something because people were dying at a higher rate.
People aren't dying as much, which is a great thing for humanity, but it forces us to play our trial out.
Plus, Gilead could afford an army of advocates for their crap medicine, whereas if anyone mentions leronlimab, twelve weasels pop up to scream about dreamcatchers
