It's likely just an issue of coding on death certificates. Instead of listing respiratory failure, pneumonia, renal failure or another virus-caused condition that actually ended the persons life, only COVID was entered as cause of death for 6% of patients.

This probably has nothing to do with the real-world pathology of the disease but merely how comprehensively death certificates are filled out.
