Shorting a stock is basically borrowing shares from someone who wishes to earn interest on said shares with the intention of replacing those shares by buying the replacements at a lower cost pocketing the difference minus the shares replaced and interest. Hope my definition is correct ...never actually shorted anything but should be able to find definition online investopedia is a good source.
