For those who still don't understand why the US DoD has found itself in such a mess for the next 25 years whilst struggling to replace its Cold War legacy fleet of KC-135 and KC-10 tankers, this is an excellent article explaining in layman's terms the ongoing issues with the KC-46.

The original USAF KC-X competition was won by Airbus in 2008 to provide the A330 MRTT as the KC-45.
Following vested interest political interference - despite Airbus offering to set up a production line in the USA - the competition was re-run against changed parameters. Boeing won by "underbidding" - hoping to make up profits on through life costs and foreign sales.
The A330 MRTT went on to become the world class leading tanker used by all significant air forces other than the USAF - including the Royal Air Force (14 - contractor owned), French Air Force (12), the NATO Multinational MRTT Fleet ( , Australia (7), Saudi Arabia (6) and Singapore (6).
So far, 60 x A330 MRTT have been ordered by 12 customers with 42 delivered.
