Borel...Can't pool because the patients are not from the same population (m/m vs. s/c so you wouldn't have iid). Also, ANOVA and its non-parametric cousin (Kruskal-Wallis) ignore the ordinal scale and would be highly underpowered...or maybe I'm not seeing what you are getting at?
