This study demonstrates that cultured normal airway epithelial cells may be infected with influenza virus A, that the viral RNA replicates in the cells, and that influenza viral infection induces these cells to express RANTES mRNA and produce RANTES. This study also demonstrates that the supernatant of cells infected with influenza virus has strong chemotactic activity for eosinophils that is suppressed to the level of uninfected cells by anti-RANTES antibodies.
