I heard this a little differently.
I thought Dr. Patterson was smiling because the virologist was a little late to the party (in terms of recognizing RANTES).
And that Dr. Patterson was reinforcing the fact that they (he) got there first by saying we've been doing this for 2.5 months.
Of course, I could be mistaken.
