That's a bit of a cynical/conspiracy POV.
One could make a reasonable argument that HCQ was hyped mainly due to the anecdotal efficacy reports coming out at the time as well as the fact that it was a cheap, readily available and easy to administer drug.
If rigorous studies prove it's ineffective, so be it. But the world is better off if it works, even partially.
Leronlimab will see brighter days regardless.
