There have been a couple of companies that for several years have been saying they were trying to come up with a vaccine for the common cold, using the parts that are common to ALL coronaviruses as the basis for the vaccine, rather than using the (easier) technology that uses the parts of the virus that do change by mutation.
But this is why a treatment -- ideally an anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-inflammatory drug or combination -- is needed. It's not "just" for this virus -- it's for the next awful one that appears.
Let's see, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory.... hmmmm, I wonder what company has a drug that can do all three?
And we'll hope that the companies that have been working on a "universal" coronavirus vaccine will succeed in finding it.
