I understand this point of view, but disagree. To be clear, I am NOT asking to approve medicines WITHOUT A CLEAN SAFETY RECORD AND AN EXTENSIVE DATABASE OF HUNDREDS OF PATIENTS... I am advocating to emergency approve perfectly save treatments like Athersys's Multistem and Cytodyn's leronliman, to mention just two, for severe cases, with the condition of conducting further studies to collect data...
I simply don't see the rationale for grating emergency use authorization for hydroxychloroquine (whose safety profile is not that clean) with questionable or at least debatable efficacy, when there are products available that are safer and are likely to provide more benefit as to cytokine storm.
Emergency situations require out-of-box thinking.
