There's no reason to use a systemic drug for ulcerative colitis or any other intestinal problem, when the time-release pill can drop its payload in the right location.
You NEVER want to use a systemic drug when a localized drug will do. Why risk side effects, even very rare or mild ones? We are still so ignorant of how taking a drug NOW might affect someone's health in the future. The less systemic exposure to any drug, the better.
Remember, you can hurt yourself by drinking too much water -- there's nothing that's innocuous in an excessive dose.
