The Hydroxychloroquine and Azithromycin treatments were to start today in New York. I have been unable to find any reports on how it is to be used or who will receive the treatments.
The words trial or study have not been applied to this treatment, only compassionate use. I am sure someone will organize and follow the treatment results so a report on the the results will be issued.
The concern about the drug interaction which theoretically can produce cardiac arrhythmias is real. The risk of a cardiac complication becomes more likely with the large numbers of patients being treated. If this occurs other treatment options will be reviewed.
The only alternative antibiotics I have seen proposed are Brilacidin, Vancomycin and Daptomycin. Of the 3 Brilacidin has a number of advantages: it is the safest, it has antiinflammatory properties, and it can be given once as an iv dose. The biggest disadvantages of Brilacidin is availability and and lack of experience with doctors and hospitals.
IMO Brilacidin is sure to be studied for Coronavirus and likely to be used.
Good Luck,
Farrell
