Variables have to be isolated and results standardized. We don't know all the variables in the treatments of these patients and we obviously don't have a standardization of results across time (readings for the same parameters for multiple patients as the time periods evolve).

And I'm not going to argue with an attorney about language but I'm pretty sure most of the dictionary can be used metaphorically.
