Trump blocked every request for documents and appearances by people with firsthand knowledge of his phone call.
Subpoenas would have been tied up in the courts for months and then you would complain about the impeachment being drawn out.

We both know exactly what the worry was. They would have been under oath and under cross examination. So far no one who works for Trump, and has been charged, has faired well under those circumstances.
