They should get my permission before shorting my shares! Believe it or not there are times I would most welcome them to do so, so I can fry them with a nice bounce and catch them.
I don't know if it's true or not either, and I've heard it matters if it's a non IRA account or an IRA. My GTC's are set so high on all my equities I'd be a gazillionaire if even one went through.

That is the correct procedure using the etrade platform. In theory, it keeps your broker from loaning shares for shorting purposes without your permission. Not sure if it works, but I don't take chances and have always used this strategy.
