On Saturday morning, Donald Trump posted a profoundly deranged tweet expressing his “hate” for New York City and New York State. This was coming from a guy who has previously said antisemitic things numerous times. Hours after Trump’s tweet, someone carried out a deadly antisemitic attack in New York.
We don’t yet have any way of knowing whether or not Donald Trump’s anti-New York tweet, or his previous antisemitic remarks, contributed to Saturday night’s deadly attack. But we do know what happened next: hours after the violent attack, Trump made a point of retweeting his own anti-New York tweet, as if to take credit for what had just happened.
This is nothing short of psychotic. It’s also eerily similar to when white supremacists and neo-Nazis staged a hate rally that resulted in the murder of Heather Heyer, and in response, Trump insisted that there were very fine people on both sides of the issue.
Donald Trump’s overall poll numbers are in the gutter. Now more than ever, he knows that he has to find a way to hang onto his existing base of racist, sexist, xenophobic, homophobic, and antisemitic lowlifes. Trump’s anti-New York retweet, hours after the deadly attack in New York, is just the latest example of his psychopathic eagerness to keep these types in the fold.
