From the etrade website. If you go to account preferences you can find "lot selection". Mine is set to Specific Lot. Here are the explanations.
First-In, First-Out (FIFO) Lots with the earliest acquisition date are sold first. This is the default selection at E*TRADE.
Last-In, First-Out (LIFO) Lots with the latest acquisition date are sold first.
Specific Lot This method gives you the most control over the gains and losses you realize by allowing you to select the specific shares you'd like to sell each time you place an order to close a position.
