How do you know you sold the shares that did not have due bill attached? You have to go into your broker system, make sure you have the ability to direct the cost basis shares (FIFO, LIFO, etc). Then I think the next day you have to go in an redirect to the shares you wanted the cost basis event to go towards. Call you broker and ask if your actually sold those shares or if they can redirect your trade to those shares.
