But here’s the thing: in every profile piece I read he’s presented as a former United Methodist pastor. I become frustrated. Why, because it’s not entirely true. John writes his bio and leaves his interviewers with the impression he was an ordained United Methodist Minister. He never says as much but that’s the impression you get if you don’t go any further.

If you dig deeper, you realize he was a lay person, employed as a youth minister (for a decade) at a mega United Methodist Church. Yes, that’s ministry. Good, needed, and important ministry. John Pavlovitz wasn’t a local pastor, a student pastor, member in full connection, or under any kind of Episcopal appointment. Do you call civilian contractors who work for the military soldiers? (I call them mercenaries.)
