Another possible factor for the "otherwise puzzling extension" is that Bo Dietl needs to conserve/raise cash. Remember his NYC Mayor's campaign? That was not cheap and he may have campaign or business related related debts to pay. So your merger idea makes sense to me to help him preserve/obtain liquidity IMHO.
