The legendary sailor completes his circumnavigation of the world, returning to Plymouth, England, in a ship called Golden Hind, becoming the first British sailor to achieve the feat. Drake had set sail on Dec. 13, 1577, hoping to loot Spanish settlements on the Pacific coast of the New World. In 1581, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth I for his services to the crown.
