“Most remarkably, pSC transplanted either naked or within barium alginate‐based microspheres (MC‐SC) (de Vos et al., 2006; Luca et al., 2007, 2015) led to prevention and reversal of T1D in 88% or 81% of NOD mice with overt diabetes, respectively, with no need for further insulin or cell therapy. In association with this effect, systemic immune tolerance re‐appeared with detection of functionally active pancreatic islet cells. New islets were comprised of insulin‐secreting and glucose‐responsive cells. The regenerative effects of SCs strictly depended upon the efficiency of tryptophan metabolism in the xenografts. This eventually led to new islet formation and raised the number of autoantigen‐specific regulatory T cells within a TGF‐β‐dependent manner, with neo‐formed islets appearing in the diabetic recipient mice (Fallarino et al., 2009).”

The one caveat is this is preclinical. Have human studies begun?
