I took that to mean as he should have been watching RP more closely. He just assumed RP was a very capable person and statements to him were correct, but after talking to MC, he realized that was a mistake.

Immediately after that statement is where all the problems that RP listed started happening. Giving work to others, making a CSO positive to handle some of RPs job. Contacting others personally to get an emergency ind with tnbc, to have patients injected there at least. Moving nash and cancer studies to other labs.

Those actions to me leads me to believe he had re-evaluated what RP was capable of doing. And as others have pointed out, there is not a lot RP can point to over the last few months as items he had accomplished.
