Why would legit brokerage houses ever tell stock holders that they were borrowing their shares for short sales? They could keep all the proceeds and the acct holder would never be the wiser. Seems the chances of a brokerage getting caught for this underhanded trick is quite small - I know I have never been contacted to lend my shares and thus have never received a dime for doing so.
