Good move. Last time I checked, it works. Some brokers don't allow shorting of stocks below a certain price, but many have no such limit. With Etrade, they're all fair game as far as I know, so I "lock" my shares up too. Just set your ask nice and high so there's no chance of getting cleaned out for a price you wouldn't be ok with.
