I don't believe the company will say this, but I believe it's what they're doing. Essentially they're giving away bits and pieces of their products in exchange for the trials which must be done to gain approval. This can work provided they gain intellectual rights, and the trials prove they work.
It's hard to say how much of the drug they'll still own in the end, but even a small percentage could be huge for this size a company. With success in a single trial they could maintain greater ownership in other drugs, and be all the more lucrative in other drugs, but once again IP is the key before substantial money is spent on Phase 2 or 3 Trials.
As an update on me, I've now had a hernia surgery in addition to the spinal surgery, when it rains it pours. I hope to go home soon, but not until I know I can handle the stairs at our house.
