Please let me explain a little better here.
Most people think metal salt solution is metal ion together with other ions mixed with water, and REE extraction technology simply pulls the metal ions out. that is not true. metal ion and together with other very specific ions form metal complex, which is kind of simple ligand. this metal complexes has certain size, shape, and chemistry characters, these metal complexes dissolve (1) in the water, also dissolve (2) in certain solvents, and also can be (3) combined with other ligands to form even more complex ligands. In case of SX, it utilizes (1) and (2) to achieve extraction. In case of MRT, it utilizes (1) and (3) to achieve extraction.
For normal extraction, the PLS metal ion content has to reach certain level, below the threshold, you can refine it millions times, you still get nothing out. but for MRT, this threshold is extremely low, it even works at level of 1/1,000,000,000.
For normal extraction, the HCl cost is huge. But in the case oil sand, the solution comes as by product, MRT can successfully extract REE and many other valuables from this by product. Possible now you can see the big picture.
