Shademeister, I guess the Fed. Gov. wants to meddle in education because it wants to meddle in everything it can possibly meddle in.
In 1996 I was standing in a voting line and struck up a conversation with a lady in front of me who happened to be a teacher. When I mentioned to her that I had been working on Larry Bigham's campaign* in the 5th District of South Carolina she responded, "There's no way I could ever vote for him. He wants to do away with the Fed. Dept. of Education". So I asked her, "What is the Dept of Education doing for her or any of her fellow teachers that is so valuable that they couldn't do without it and warrants them getting 32 billion a year?*" She just very simply had not nary an answer....... I voted for Bob Dole that year....What a distasteful choice we had!
* I also worked on his campaign in 1994..... We almost won that one..... John Spratt was the incumbent..... John was defeated by Nick Mulvaney in 2010.
** They get considerably more than 32 billion a year now.
