It's sickening that drug companies have wasted billions of dollars and decades of research, pursuing the WRONG target. The amyloid theory that has been the prevalent purported "cause" of Alzheimer's is finally beginning to be debunked. For years scientists were ridiculed for proposing alternate theories. Now the "fringe" scientists are finally being proven correct, but the hubris of the establishment scientists who insisted that amyloid was the cause (not the symptom, which in my opinion and that of many others is the case) continues. Meanwhile, companies like AVXL that are studying alternate mechanisms continue to be scorned. (Not saying AVXL is necessarily on to "THE" drug that will help -- just that no one takes these small companies seriously.)
