The Problem with Cold & Electric Cars

(Many EV owners got a surprise this week.)

Everyone who ran out and bought an electric car has suddenly discovered that when it gets cold, the battery will lose on average 20-25% of its charge.

The idea that electric cars will replace fossil fuels is really a dream.

That will work in warm territories, but when it gets cold, they will require more energy production to service them.

This comes at a time when power plants also have increased demand to keep people warm. Even a heat-pump, which runs on electric, will stop putting out heat when the temperature drops to 40 degrees F or lower.

If we are indeed going to move to electric cars, then with a new cold-age/ice age approaching, the need to generate more power in winter will present problems nobody considered on the planning board.
