Sadly the demand for opioids includes many people who actually need them.
Recently, a seventy-nine-year-old woman who has had three back surgeries still lived with extreme pain. She was on Oxycontin for a dozen years.
When her doctor reduced her meds by half, she pleaded for an exception. She was told NO.
She then took the remaining pills. Her suicide note said that she could no longer live with the pain.
Maybe there need to be exceptions. Her doctor knew her well and knew she was not an abuser.
But medical decisions are now made by the government and not the doctor.
