Seems like a pretty unsupportable assumption at least based on the press release which makes it sound like it's a function of properties specific to CdSe and ZnS. Due to a directionally asymmetric lattice mismatch between CdSe and ZnSe, the core, at top right, is compressed... That being said, relative to the typical unsupportable assumptions made here, this one is fairly trivial.
