I have also confirmed (a year ago) with my Charles Schwab account about locking my shares up for this purpose. They told me they don't loan out shares for any purpose at all.
So far in five years, I am very happy with Charles Schwab as my brokerage house, and they have since dropped their trades down a dollar to $4.95.
