How would you like to have coverage for a condition in one job, lose the job, and then be disqualified from coverage because of that condition. THAT is what prevailed in the ENTIRE health insurance market
You can pretend it was a healthcare coverage paradise before Obamacare but the U.S had poorer outcomes at higher costs than most of the industrialized world attains with their coverage.
