If I recall, there was a dress rehearsal for this around 2:42 PM EST 5/6/2010.
Later they called it a “Flash Crash”, and were apparently powerless to explain it.
But perhaps they did figure it out, and wisely concealed the reason to avoid advertising vulnerabilities of our exchanges. However, it should not have been possible in the first place.
