The difference would be that 2fa and multifactor can be sent to authenticate a user via a single channel (inband which is not secure) or two channel (out of band which is the most secure). SFOR is the patent owner (google "COBAS patent" of the OOBA patent According to the PTAB decission in OCT. '17. This is what we are appealing and should have no problem winning.
So the Iranians may be hacking (as can any hacker) the inband 2FA. Sadly most techies putting ads out trying to explain 2FA dont seem to know that there are inband and OOB methods of authentication. Consumers are also being mislead.
Also look up the court docs. posted on hangout and liehub. The court docs discuss the difference and even refer to SFOR's patent as "true out of band authentication" because there are so many misrepresentaion out on the market.
