I think the psychological factor you hit on and have been steadfast with is a key factor in Trump's support.
Trump has played on fears. People with deep fears, politically and societal have mostly external loci of control. They allow the external noise to guide their thought processes. For many It's the easy way to deal with difficult problems that require conceptualization. Simply believe the easy. They'd much more readily go with the, "my life is shitty because....," excuse.
