Cost is always an issue when buying a car ... until it's not. It's all about the Marketing AND demand. Think about rear view cameras in cars. When we bought a new car years ago with "the full package" it included the camera. As near as I can tell it may prevent hitting something in your driveway at 5mph. My wife was far more interested in the heated seats and remote start feature, but, the camera was part of the pkg. I think it was around $250 for the early ones as an option. Her latest car does shut down her phone.
Parents have to be informed that this cheap option - $250 or so - could save their child's life and/or legal bills and other legal issues. Businesses have to be shown that this product can save them money in the long run and make them a better corporate citizen. Insurance companies should be an easy sell.
My understanding is that the DD culprits are: young drivers; busy Moms carpooling kids from one activity to another; and, professionals (mostly sales) that are using their phone to keep in touch with customers & making money. I don't see a buyer in that group of DD abusers. These products have to be sold to the people with something to gain by this "investment".
BTW - have you ever tried to text and drive? Very difficult! And, dangerous!
